I am an associate member of the Society for Freelance Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) and I follow their Ensuring Editorial Excellence code of practice. Please follow the links for the SfEP definitions of copy-editing and proofreading, but I have summarised what I can do for you below.
Copy-editing: I will check and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as style and substance. Consistency is my middle name, so I will check the copy against your style sheet if available (I can create one for you), ensure that chapters are structured correctly and that questions have answers that are present and correct. If I am editing textbooks or journal articles I will also cross-check the placing of tables, figures and references (and make sure they are in the correct Vancouver or Harvard style). I will supply a neat and tidy MS Word file with tracked changes and comments/queries.
Proofreading: I can work on hard copy or an electronic file (pdf mark-up). I have a very good eye for layout and copy flow, and am happy to assist with perfecting the structure and appearance of design-led texts at proof stage.
Project management: I can take your project from manuscript to publication, working alongside you and your authors, designers, typesetters and printers.
Plagiarism and/or fact checking: It is too easy to cut and paste text in from another source, and confusing for authors to know what they can or cannot use. I can perform a plagiarism check, advise on acceptable use, and rewrite the erroneous copy where necessary. I also offer a fact-checking service.
